Gil Garcia is a Media Arts Education Specialist and Independent Video Producer with a background in advertising, working for companies such as GSD&M and LatinWorks. A graduate of The University of Texas Radio-TV-Film Program, he is currently in his tenth year teaching video production at Stephen F. Austin High School in Austin, Texas. Gil is also a curriculum writer and textbook author and recently finished co-authoring, “Television Production & Broadcast Journalism” for Goodheart-Willcox. Gil serves as a media education consultant for React To Film, The PBS NewsHour and multiple school districts across the country. Gil also serves on the advisory board of the The Student Reporting Labs Project in Washington D.C. as well as the community advisory board for KLRU, the Austin,Texas PBS affiliate. Gil was named “Distinguished Broadcast Adviser of the year” in 2016 by the National Journalism Education Association and his students have won top honors at the local, state and national level and have been recognized or featured by: The Obama Administration, National Public Radio, Texas Monthly, The PBS NewsHour, The BBC, and many others.
